Tuscon Senior Olympic Festival
The following was written by Priscilla Scott, Tournament Director for Voyager RV Resort.
The tournament team worked diligently with the Senior Olympics, to schedule events for players, so that they could also play at Happy Trails.
Tucson Senior Olympic Festival, Jan 21-25
New for 2011:The tournament will run from Friday - Tuesday. Meet & Greet will be on Thursday, Jan 20 at 6:00 pm.
Men's and Women's Skill Level events are on Monday and Tuesday. These replace the Masters and Legends events that were held in the past. Note: There are no mixed doubles or men's/women's singles in skill level, only age-based.
You get two t-shirts with each Doubles Entry Form submitted this year, so remember to include the sizes on your entry form(s). If you enter multiple events on one Doubles Entry Form you will still only get two t-shirts. You can send in multiple entry forms, using one for each event, if desired.
We are asking everyone to also enter their events on the USAPA website. This is in addition to the Senior Olympics Festival paper entry form. It will help us get the registration information more quickly and completely. Click on this link or paste it into your browser to get to the USAPA software: http://www.usapa.org/tourney/signup.php?tname=tso11&admin=tso11 .
Corrections:
The information on the website, http://www.tucsonseniorgames.org/ , is correct. You can get to the Pickleball information by selecting Event Briefs on the left side of the home page or clicking on this link: http://www.tucsonseniorgames.org/event_briefs.html#pickleball .
There is an error in the dates listed for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday's events in the Senior Olympic Festival booklet. The days of the week are correct, but the dates are wrong. The schedule should read:
Fri, Jan 21 Women's doubles, Men's singles (age-based)
Sat, Jan 22 Mixed doubles (age-based)
Sun, Jan 23 Men's doubles, Women's singles (age-based)
Mon, Jan 24 Men's doubles (skill level)
Tue, Jan 25 Women's doubles (skill level)
Wed, Jan 26 Rain Makeup Day
Entry Form Hints:
Doubles entries must use the Doubles Entry Form. Click this link for the Doubles Entry Form: http://www.tucsonseniorgames.org/PDFs/DblsEntryForm_2011.pdf
Singles entries must use the Individual Entry Form. We recommend that you skip the online registration since it is only available for singles events. Click this link for the Individual Entry Form: http://www.tucsonseniorgames.org/PDFs/Individual_Entry_Form2011.pdf
The mixed doubles course codes are listed under "Coed". There are different course codes for the men’s & women’s age-based and skill level events. Click this link for the Course Code Index:
http://www.tucsonseniorgames.org/PDFs/sof_courses_2011.pdf
Your age is based on your age as of December 31, 2011. You cannot play down in singles (i.e you must play in your age bracket) but you can play down to your partner’s age bracket in age-based doubles.
You must in the skill level bracket of the highest rated partner.
More than one event can be put on the Doubles Entry Form but you will need to collect waiver signatures from all your partners and submit all the money together. Remember, you only get two t-shirts per entry form, even if you enter multiple events on the one form.
Registration deadline is January 1, or January 11 with a $3 late fee.
If you have questions please contact Priscilla Scott, 520-574-1203 or pscottpball@gmail.com , or call the Senior Olympic registration office, 520-791-4877. The main Senior Olympic office line is 520-791-3244.

A Thank You From Voyager to our Palm Creek Referees
... a thank you just doesn't seem enough for all the hours you volunteered by refereeing at the Voyager Tournament last week. We couldn't have had such a smooth running tournament without all your help. You really stepped up to the plate when our plea went out for help. We never had to delay the matches because we didn't have enough refs to cover our courts. I was so stressed that I wouldn't have enough people but David Jordan and Priscilla Scott assured me that all would go well. I was so glad they were right!!!!
I received nothing but compliments from the spectators and the players about a job well done by all of you. Even some of my own refs who were doing this for the first time felt less stressed because of your patience with them....
THANK YOU.......Jane and Chuck Gilmore

WOW - WHAT A CLINIC
Thanks to our Club President AJ Fraties, who arranged this clinic for the residents of Palm Creek. This was a "great" kick off to our new season!
Mark Friedenberg National Champion - Author - Current USAPA Ratings Chairman Past USAPA President |
Mark came to us directly from a week of hard play at the USAPA National Tournament where he once again won several medals. As Mark resides in Seattle, WA., this stop was not exactly on his way home.
Over the two days Mark explained and demonstrated every aspect of play as well as answered every question he was asked. As an added bonus he brought with him Don Paschal to assist him in demonstrating and to play in an exhibition match
Don Paschal
National Champion Adult Division
Both Mark and Don generously donated their time and expertise for these two days so that the proceeds from this clinic will be donated to the children in our area to enhance their learning and playing the game of pickleball.
If all of this wasn't enough, they also agreed to do a mini clinic for the children who attend "Len Colla Recreation Center" after school. This center has 2 indoor and 2 outdoor pickleball courts. With boundless energy and enthusiasm these children where given a memory for a life time
Children from the Len Colla Recreation Center
The children ended the clinic on a high note with home made cookies and lemonade

In Memory of Bob Scott
As many of you may know, we recently lost a great friend of pickleball in Bob Scott, who passed away very unexpectedly on October 11th . Bob loved pickleball and was always a terrific guy to play with or against...a fine player but really one of the most gentlemanly people on the courts; a real inspiration in terms of his good humor, sense of fun and fair play and his willingness to play with anybody and everybody.
Bob served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a business education teacher at the Wausau East and Wausau West High Schools.
Other than his family, Bob probably loved hunting best...and died while hunting pheasant in a favorite place in North Dakota.
If you would like to send a card or a note to his wife Carol, for his address please contact Rosemary at RosemaryReese@aol.com or A.J. at ajfraties@gmail.com

On top of all of this our very own Doug Kant was quoted in the St. George "Spectrum", a daily newspaper
Doug Kant and Carol Haworth live far apart - he's from Michigan, she lives in Canada - but managed to connect online where a love of the sport brought them together for the senior games. "She needed a partner and I needed a partner and so we hooked up on the internet," said Kant, who is making his first appearance in the Huntsman games. "They play pickleball down at an RV park (where I live) and they asked me to come down and play and it sure is fun."

MARK FRIEDENBERG CLINIC
The following annoucement is for all residents of Palm Creek. If you have only thought about playing the game or are a tournament medal winner, this is the clinic you do not want to miss. To be guarnteed a seat at this clinic register early, see details below:
On November 8th and 9th, Mark Friedenberg and his colleagues will join us at Palm Creek for one of Mark’s rare but very well-regarded clinics. Whether you are a beginning player or more advanced, you can learn a terrific amount from what Mark will share, and if you’re looking to improve your game this is an opportunity you can’t miss.
In the sport of pickleball, there’s perhaps no better known player than Mark, and certainly there’s nobody with better credentials. He has been with the sport virtually since its beginning, served for over four years as President of the USAPA, started (and is still running) Pro-Lite Sports, the premier pickleball-paddle manufacturing company in the world, authored the wide-selling Official Pickleball Handbook now in its second edition , and, perhaps most significantly, has competed in and won virtually every major pickleball competition. He is (with Pat Kane) the current 2010 National Men’s Doubles Open Champion. Mark is an extraordinary doubles player but he is also a tremendous singles player - ask AJ how he did against Mark in the Bronze Medal round at the Nationals last year - and above all is known as a gentleman, an excellent coach and a fierce competitor and at the same time a role model for sportsmanship.
In this clinic Mark and his colleagues will cover the following subjects:
November 8th (All Day):
1. Basic Fundamentals for ALL levels!
2. Beyond the Fundamentals: Dinking, Drop Shots, etc.
3. Doubles Strategies
4. Singles Strategies
5. How Practice can make Perfect!
6. How to Select a Paddle
7. Exhibition Match
November 9th (Morning only)
1. Advanced Techniques: Tendencies, Faking, Sweeps, etc
2. Secrets of the Master Players
3. Mental Toughness
4. Paddle Demo
5. Exhibition Match (If time permits)
Mark will also be showcasing his newest Pro-Lite paddles (including the brand-new Blaster….see it now for yourself at http://www.pro-litesports.com
Because of the rarity of this clinic and the quality of the material and instruction, we expect that these clinics will be very well attended.
Mark and his colleagues are very generously donating their time; the registration fee will be donated to charity in this spirit of giving
Fee: Palm Creek residents: A single $5.00 fee will provide you access to clinics on both days, must be paid in advance. Do not mail fees at this time; you will be notified, after you have registered as to when fees will be collected.
Early registration is definitely recommended. Reserving your spot is EASY! Simply let Rosemary Reese know at: RosemaryReese@aol.com

Picking a Partner by George Brewer
George Brewer lives and plays at The Villages in Florida. He writes a column for a local newspaper
Picking a Partner
You are at the courts and a large number of potential partners have been assembled there for your approval. There they are the whole tribe of them, all lined up waiting to be chosen. You have no idea who any of these people are and you are not permitted to question any of the candidates. You must make a selection based solely on what you see standing there in silence.
How do you decide?
Picking a Partner
You are at the courts and a large number of potential partners have been assembled there for your approval. There they are the whole tribe of them, all lined up waiting to be chosen. You have no idea who any of these people are and you are not permitted to question any of the candidates. You must make a selection based solely on what you see standing there in silence.
How do you decide?
- Male or female, I don’t care; I’d pick the one whose arms are so long their knuckles drag on the court surface when they walked in.
- Never! Let me say again, never, play with anyone holding a wooden paddle.
- If the only courts you play on are outside, pass on anyone whose skin shows no evidence of being in the sun for a long time.
- The first thing I’d do before making a decision is check their ankles. Avoid anyone wearing a house arrest ankle bracelet.
- If a candidate is wearing a back pack make sure you don’t make a decision before checking it for a portable oxygen tank.
- Anyone carrying a paddle in their left hand and a chair in their right isn’t in the match for the long run.
- Never select a partner whose spouse intends to coach from the side lines.

Summer Pickleball at Palm Creek
No one is suffering from Pickleball withdrawal at Palm Creek. Four days a week at 6:00 AM you will find 3 of our courts very busy. It does not seem to matter that it is July! Players from our neighboring communities Mission Royale and Robson Ranch drop in and provide us with competition on a regular basis.
Note: some players are missing as this was not a scheduled photo -op

Keeping The Court Busy
Our very own Tom Earley is holding clinics in Georgia on "Pickleball Strategy and Technique"
Each clinic is limited to 12 new players
Think of this as more competition in your future

It is with deep sorrow this post is written, Larry passed away on June 10th
A memorial service will be held with a reception to follow:
Saturday, June 19th at 2:00 PM
Kenmore Community Church
7504 NE Bothell Way
Kenmore, WA 98028
Condolences may be sent to his wife:
Joan Haggerty
1648 Huntwood Lane

The following is Larry's Obituary found on heraldnet.com.
Larry J. Petersen, of East Wenatchee, WA, was born in Port Angeles, WA March 29, 1940. He grew up in Port Townsend, WA and graduated from high school there where he was very active in music and sports and was an outstanding athlete. After graduation he served three years in the U.S. Army (Airborne Division) and jumped into Cuba when the U.S. was involved there. He spent his early working career in the insurance business in the Seattle, WA area before starting, owning and operating "Pacific Marketing", a direct mail marketing business in Monroe, WA, with his partner, Joan Hagerty. After retiring in 1995 Larry and Joan traveled the U.S. and Canada in their RV before settling in East Wenatchee in 2002 where they spent their summer months golfing and fishing. Their winters were spent in AZ where Larry was very active in golf, softball, pickleball, tennis and also played in a band.
Larry suffered a stroke and passed away at Swedish Memorial Hospital in Seattle on June 10. He is survived by Joan Hagerty; her son, Chris Hagerty, of Seattle; daughter, Lynne Petersen, of Kenmore, WA; son, Lonny Petersen, of Monroe; three brothers, Charles Petersen, Gene Petersen and David Petersen; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ingolf, who was killed in action during WWII; his mother, Mary Hendricks; son, Jerry; and brother, Earl Hendricks.
When reading this obituary it appears that we knew Larry as he was in High School - "Very Active in Sports" and "Very Active in Music". Larry will be missed on the pickleball courts, his music will also be missed at our annual tournament dinner.
In closing our club sends its deepest sympathy and prayers to his wife Joan and to his entire family

Joyce Staffen
Joyce is more than a "little" active when it comes to the game of Pickleball, she previously served as our club treasurer for 2 years and for the past two years she has organized a competitive Women's event for our club members. Joyce also does a great job competing in tournaments, this season she won medals in 6 different tournaments and went home this summer and has already picked up another 2 medals. Joyce definitely gives meaning to the expression “She is not getting older, she is getting better". To round out her Pickleball commitment she is also the USAPA ambassador for Mecosta County, Michigan.
Last year Joyce was written up in her hometown newspaper. I did contact Pioneer newspaper for a link to the article, for a clean copy, they have failed to respond. So although there is a small gap in the article below, you will get the gist of the interview
