Jay Winter

will be missed by many at Palm Creek

  Loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend passed away in Vancouver, Washington  Sunday, July 19,      2015,  surrounded by loved ones. 

 Jay served in the U.S. Army and National Guard during the Vietnam and Pueblo Crisis era (1966 – 1971). In 1969, he moved to Centralia, Washington and began a 15 year career in law enforcement, becoming police chief the last five years. While in the police department, Jay completed a bachelor of science degree in public administration. His entire career was spent in law enforcement, as a Lewis County Commissioner, with Washington Counties Risk Pool and as Walla Walla County Personnel and Risk Manager. He retired in 2012 after 41 years in public service.

Jay was very athletic and enjoyed a variety of sports. He excelled at basketball, tennis, racquetball, softball, water and snow skiing and in recent years, pickleball. He also refereed pickleball and basketball games and coached the Centralia girl’s High School Junior Varsity basketball team for several years.

A man of many interests, Jay loved car racing and raced go carts, stock cars and later, mini-cups. Watching NASCAR was a favorite hobby and he tried to attend one race every year. Bicycling and motorcycling were also activities he enjoyed with many friends through the years. 

 He also owned and operated a Christian bookstore, the Commentary, for many years. Jay will always be known and respected for his deep Christian faith, strength of character, honesty, integrity and leading by example.

Jay is survived by his wife, Pamella; daughter, Nicoe (Jerry) King; grandsons, Austin and Alex; son, Chad Winter; granddaughter, Sabaea;  stepdaughters, Heidi (Warner) Scott; granddaughters, Casey and Riley; Holly (Justin) Clegg; grandsons, Forrest and Hunter; Heather (Ronnie) Miller; twin grandsons, Reed and Rory; brothers, Jerry (Darlene) Winter and Dan (Bonnie) Winter; sister, Pam (Mike) Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Aug.  2, 2015, at Liberty Bible Nazarene Church, 12401 NE Salmon Creek Ave, Vancouver, WA 98686. A private graveside will be held at a later date at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Memorial contributions may be made in Jay’s name to Danner Farms Mentoring Project, 1900 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR 97862.

Guest Housing

USAPA NATIONALS VII

As Palm Creek is proudly cohosting USAPA Nationals VII, we would like to offer Guest Housing to USAPA Ambassadors. Some may stay only for one night, some a few days and others for the entire tournament which will run from November 8 -15.

If you will be at Palm Creek and have a second bedroom or a pull out couch and are willing to host our dedicated volunteers, you will be providing a service that will be very much appreciated. The guidelines, listed below, clarify what a host would need to do and what is the expected behavior of the guest.

Friendly neighbors, not members of the Palm Creek Pickleball Club, are also welcome to be a host.

Ambassadors will make their own travel plans and if not playing, they will be registering for Clinics, the Seminar and Ambassador Events which will all occur on November 12th.   We are coordinating this now because of all of the planning required for putting on an event this large.

If you are interested in being a host, please e-mail me with your preferences:

• A single person or a couple
  
• One night, a few days or the entire tournament
  

Any other preferences you may have, such as an ambassador from your home State!

ACCOMMODATION GUIDELINES

FOR VISITING AMBASSADORS

November 8-15, 2015

A bedroom and nearby bathroom is provided for 1-2 Ambassadors during the tournament. It is important that this is conventional living space, not a built out shed or a Casita that does not have a proper bathroom.

Visiting Ambassadors must provide their own transportation.   We do not recommend you pick them up at an airport. They need a vehicle to get to/from the events and to go out to eat, get groceries, sightsee etc.

Hosts should provide some refrigerator space, & time & methods for Ambassadors to prepare their own breakfast.

Ambassadors can bring snacks for lunches & they also can usually get food at the events. They should plan on going out to dinner daily.

Ambassadors MAY take Hosts out to eat and Hosts may invite Ambassadors to share an evening meal with them at home.

Ambassadors should give some gratuity such as a gift certificate, perhaps at a local restaurant.

Thoughtfulness and consideration are the orders of the day.

USAPA Regional Tournaments are becoming the next big "Thing",  Sally has received many kudos's in her region as co-tournament director, for what currently is the largest Regional Tournament to date,  With all this work, Sally found the energy to win the women's 4.5 Silver medal in doubles. As a warm up, Sally took home a Bronze from Henderson, playing women's doubles 5.0!

Referee Clinic

Ann Early

About 8 years ago Ann took our referee clinic taught by Tom and Jeanne Gearhart.  Ann decided to take the clinic again this past season, with Tom and Jeanne, to better prepare herself to offer this clinic at home in Georgia.  Following the same format: class, court experience and the referee test, Ann hopes to add 24 new referees to the roster.  Experienced referee's are a great asset to have on the courts, to assist players in learning the rules of the game, in addition to having them for tournament play.

If you are winning medals this summer or if your Palm Creek experience has inspired you to volunteer to help grow pickleball in either your home town or on the road, send me the information and some pictures, for future Blogs!

Registration Update:  Registration opened June 1 and over 250 players have already signed up; well ahead of last year's pace. Based on registration demand, we anticipate closing some divisions early this year as space is limited. Don't wait to the last minute, register today!

We co-host the Nationals this year, do not miss out on the fun and excitement of these games!

Our sport is growing faster than courts can be built. Last season we had several tournaments close registration in record time, including our Duel in the Desert.  This season our Blog calendar has the date for when registration opens, for the tournaments that are club mostly participates.  As the season progresses, please let me know if I need to add additional tournaments.

Wishing Jay Winter a Speedy Recovery

The following was written by Pam Winter:

Jay Winter was recently diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma and had
 surgery on Wednesday for removal of the left kidney and tumor.  The
 surgery went as well as could be expected, and the surgeons were able to
 remove the kidney and tumor successfully.  Jay is out of intensive care
 and in intermediate care at this time.  He will be in the hospital up to
 one week and the recovery period is expected to be two to three months.
He is looking forward to full recovery and hopes to play pickleball
 with all of his friends again once he heals and gets back his strength

It has been requested that you keep Jay in your prayers for a speedy recovery
