More of in the News

Printed in the Spectrum:
CASA GRANDE — An equipment manufacturer has contributed funds that will allow for a national professional pickleball tournament in Casa Grande next week to have a $50,000 incentive prize pool for the first time.
Idaho-based Selkirk Sport, the manufacturer of high-performance paddles for pickleball, has announced the formation of the sport’s first-ever player incentive pool program. That means $50,000 in prize money will be up for grabs for players using the company’s paddles at the USAPA National Championships Nov. 4-12 at the Palm Creek Golf and RV Resort in Casa Grande.
Selkirk Sport has pledged more than $150,000 in prize money for nationwide tournament play on the 2018 professional pickleball circuit.
According to a company press release, the pool program was created to incentivize athletes to compete with their paddles. In the Casa Grande tourney, there will be a $3,500 top prize if a player wins the National Men’s, National Women’s or Mixed Open Division with a Selkirk paddle. The runner-up in those respective divisions can win $2,000, with $500 going to the third place finisher. Players must enroll in the Selkirk incentive pool program to be eligible for prize money.
Ranked pickleball players Ty McGuffin, Morgan Evans, Tonja Major and Glen Peterson will lead a team of Selkirk staff players equipped with Selkirk’s new AMPED Series paddle as they compete at Nationals.
“We are committed to investing in the growth of the sport at the professional level, which we believe will drive growth at the grassroots level,” said Mike Barnes, operations manager for Selkirk Sport. “While our ultimate goal is to develop a more traditional endorsement model customary in mainstream sports such as tennis or golf, we see this incentive program as a launching pad to validate the performance attributes of our products while driving excitement among the elite players

International Competition.....

Bainbridge Cup History written by IFP

Bainbridge Island – Pickleball’s Birthplace
It was on Bainbridge Island (known as Bainbridge by the locals) where Joel Pritchard, Barney McCallum and Bill Bell created the sport we know today as pickleball. While residing at Bainbridge in the summer of 1965, the three founders collaborated to create and design a new racquet sport that everyone could play and enjoy. Thus the name “Bainbridge Cup” was chosen to pay tribute to both the founding fathers and the birthplace of pickleball – the origins of a sport that is now played by millions of people around the world

Team North America competed against Team Europe on a global stage in Madrid, Spain on September 15th. The inaugural Bainbridge Cup is hosted by the International Federation of Pickleball. This  event was unique in that included all ages and skill levels

North American (USA/Canada) had 200 wins and Europe had 102

For Our Women

I received this from Sue Rocha ourUSAPA's ambassador for Casa Grande.
This is a great opportunity, to meet new players and hone your competitive skills.
I am sure you will agree that it is terrific opportunity, for a range of skill level play!

Hi Ladies:

Well, it is almost time for all of us to reconnect in Casa Grande.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone soon and playing some fantastic pickleball.

Picking back up on my duties as USAPA Ambassador for Casa Grande, I am hoping to offer some new opportunities for pickleball players in Casa Grande.  One of the things we are going to try is a Women's Skilled League.  The goal of the skilled league is to enable partners to practice together for tournaments in a competitive atmosphere with players of comparable skill.  However, you do not have to be competing to participate.  This is for everyone.  If you just play socially, but want to up your game and challenge yourself, please come and join us.  If you do not have a partner, please sign up for the league anyways and we will do our best to match you with someone.

The league will run for six weeks starting November 13th.  If successful, we will continue to run the league in January.  The league will be held on Mondays from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Dave White Recreational Park.  We will have six teams per division.  The divisions at this time will be:  3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5/5.0.  Each team may consist of 2-3 players allowing for a sub.  This is a six week commitment.  Please sign up no later than November 6th.

Attached is the sign up form.  Please complete and return to Margo Malouf at or Sue Rocha at  Margo has volunteered to oversee the league and I will assist.  See you on the courts.

NOTE:  The attachment is in PDF.  If you are unable to open, please let me know.  I can also send the document in Word format.

NOTE:  Please feel free to share this email with others that may be interested in joining this league.

USAPA Nationals Housing Program

This is the final year Palm Creek will be hosting the USAPA Nationals. Once again, we would like to offer Guest Housing to USAPA Ambassadors. Some may stay only for a night, and some a few days and others for the entire tournament.
For the past two years, our members have been a significant supporter of this program. (It would have been hard to do, without you)
If you will be at Palm Creek and have a second bedroom or a pull out couch and are willing to host our dedicated volunteers, you will be providing a service that will be very much appreciated. The attached guidelines clarifies what a host would need to do and what is expected behavior of the guest.
Friendly, non-playing, neighbors are also welcome to be a host.
Ambassadors need to make travel plans and if not playing, need to register for Clinics, the Seminar and Ambassador Events, this is why we are coordinating this now.
If you will be a host, please e-mail with your preferences:
  • A single person or a couple
  • One night, a few days or the entire tournament
  • Any other preferences you may have, such as an ambassador from your home state!
I look forward to hearing from you!
Rosemary Reese

November 3-12, 2017

A bedroom and nearby bathroom is provided for 1-2 Ambassadors during the tournament. It is important that this is conventional living space, not a built out shed or a Casita that does not have a proper bathroom.
Visiting Ambassadors must provide their own transportation.   We do not recommend you pick them up at an airport. They need a vehicle to get to/from the events and to go out to eat, get groceries, sightsee etc.
Hosts should provide some refrigerator space, & time & methods for Ambassadors to prepare their own breakfast.
Ambassadors can bring snacks for lunches & they also can usually get food at the events. They should plan on going out to dinner daily.
Ambassadors may take Hosts out to eat and Hosts may invite Ambassadors to share an evening meal with them at home.
Ambassadors should give some gratuity such as a gift certificate, perhaps at a local restaurant.

The 2017 USAPA National Championships will be held November 4 through November 12, 2017, with November 13 as the rain delay date. We are returning to Palm Creek in Casa Grande, Arizona and will be playing all events on 32 permanent pickleball courts.
The National Championships is an opportunity for players at all levels to play against their peers. With that goal in mind, we are pleased to announce a new format for the age event PLUS showcasing the best players in the sport in head-to-head competition TWICE during the nine days of the National Championships.
Registration opens August 1, 2017 at 1:00PM PDT
The USAPA National Championships have traditionally been divided into two major competitions. The first five days are organized by age; the last three days are open events for players who have USAPA ratings of 4.5 or 5.0.  All players who register for the age events are divided into groups based on the age of the youngest team member. This format potentially places 3.0 players against 5.0 players.
In 2017, we are changing the format to better reflect our goal of welcoming players at all skill levels! Opening weekend (Nov. 4 – 8) will feature new formats and events:
  • Age/Skill:  Age divisions will be divided by skill: 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, & 5.0.  If there are not enough players in a given skill group to create a competitive tournament experience, two skill groups may be combined within the age group. This format places players of the same age group and the same skill levels in head-to-head competition on a national stage.
  • PPF: the Professional Pickleball Federation (PPF) will hold a PPF Championship event recognizing this year’s top PPF performers. Stay tuned for announcements on the details of this fantastic event.
NOTE: Players who are eligible to participate in the PPF Championships may choose to play PPF or Age/Skill but not both.
On the second weekend (Nov. 10-12), as in prior years, all Open events will be played:
  • Open (19 and older) doubles, mixed doubles, and singles
  • Senior Open (50 and older) doubles, mixed doubles and singles
Make your plans. Register early as the number of players will exceed the capacity of the venue. Check for updated information about the
2017 USAPA National Championships!

Palm Creekers Grow Pickleball!!

Written by Della Bass and Mike Cooper
Submitted by Della Bass

Parkland Pickleheads Open 12 New Dedicated Courts – How did they get there?

In April of 2012 Della and John Bass returned from wintering in the US where they were introduced to Pickleball, a relatively new and rapidly growing sport, while staying at Palm Creek Golf and RV Resort, in Arizona. Once back home in Stony Plain, they immediately knew they had to get things going locally, because they missed playing so much, and they had only played the game for 3 weeks!  After contacting the City of Spruce Grove, and the Town of Stony Plain, both in Alberta, they were asked to submit a proposal. So Della and John got to work, together they combed the area looking for the best location for Pickleball in the area.  John then compiled all of the information and quotes, for hard costs associated with resurfacing and painting lines on old tennis courts, as well as purchasing nets, and Della compiled all of the information available on the game itself, how it was played, what was required to play, the benefits there were to the community, and what they could offer to help get the sport off the ground in Spruce Grove!

While in Palm Creek, Della had met Marg Ouimet while playing Pickleball, and discovered that she lived nearby, in Villeneuve, Alberta!  Marg was spending time early that Spring in BC, but via email offered to help with beginner lessons, and also suggested they may be able to obtain assistance from the USAPA as well.  After having contacted the Kinsmen and Kinettes in Spruce Grove, the Spruce Grove and Stony Plain Senior Centers, and putting up numerous posters all over both the Town of Stony Plain and the City of Spruce Grove, with minimal results, they were happy to have someone show some interest and enthusiasm for what they were hoping to do! In the meantime, while Della was talking with yet another friend about Pickleball, (Joan Lesburg), Joan mentioned that she knew a couple that played Pickleball, (that couple happened to be Marvin and Lorraine Richter, although Della never did get to meet them until the next winter, on the courts in Palm Creek).  Joan discussed Pickleball with her friends, and they gave Joan the name of someone they thought might be able to help, so Joan emailed Della with the name of a fellow, who had said he was also willing to help out, and he was so enthusiastic that he called THEM the next day!  That man’s name was Trevor Cook!  They now had 4 people willing to help out, with the yet to be named Pickleball Club!  Della and John completed, and submitted the proposal to the City of Spruce Grove on May 7th, 2012.  That same day, a copy was forwarded to Marg, and after a discussion with Judy Cook on May 10th, (Trevor’s wife, and current Secretary for Parkland Pickleheads), Della also emailed a copy to Trevor and Judy.  Now they had 4 Members, who together formed the Founding Members of the Club!

The City of Spruce Grove was very enthusiastic right from the beginning, and commented on how impressed they were with the information provided. They set a meeting within a week, and now with 4 enthusiastic Pickleballers, and with Seniors week just around the corner, in early June, it seemed the perfect time to launch the sport in Spruce Grove.  So with that, a date was set to have the local media come out to witness the Mayor of Spruce Grove, Stuart Houston, officially open a 4 court dedicated Pickleball facility in Spruce Grove, on June 5th, 2012.  After such a successful 1st meeting they felt they needed a name, John said it should have Pickleheads as part of the name, Della said it should be inclusive so Parkland should also be in the name, and so the Club was named. “Parkland Pickleheads”, to include all residents of the Tri Municipal Region, (Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, and the County of Parkland).  Della then set up the clubs Facebook page, using the brand new Club name to continue to get the word out!

June 5th 2012, Grand Opening on the Original 4 Pickleball Courts – Mayor Stuart Houston in the middle, and all 4 founding members are also shown here.  John and Della Bass, Marg Ouimet, and Trevor Cook
It was very good fortune for the Pickleheads, to have a Mayor in Spruce Grove who believes in an active and healthy community. In fact, Mayor Stuart Houston received the Lieutenant Governor’s Leadership for Active Communities Award in 2016…and yes he and his wife are soon to be 2 more members for the 200+ strong Parkland Pickleheads Club!!

Thanks to the continued dedicated, and forward thinking leadership team of the Parkland Pickleheads Executive, (Leslie Srogen, President; Mike Cooper, Vice President; Bill Bossman, Treasurer; Judy Cook, Secretary; Debbie Henwood, Director at Large; and Della Bass, Past President), the growing volunteer base, and the cooperation of the City of Spruce Grove Staff and Council, 4 old tennis courts were converted to 12 dedicated courts, and were opened for use on June 23rd, 2017.  The Pickleheads then hosted their 5th Annual Members Tournament on June 24th and 25th, 2017.  Check out our website for pictures and results!

The Pickleheads now have 18 courts for our growing club (over 200 members). There are already plans to take the original 6 courts, have them resurfaced, and converted into 8 courts, which will give us 20 courts within the next few years!! Our annual September Smash Tournament will be held this year on September 8-10, 2017. This event is also the Alberta Provincial Championships, for which some brackets are already FULL!
