The Robson Ranch AZ Pickleball Club has invited us to join them on Saturday, February 18, 2012 from 11am - 4pm, for the Grand Opening of their 12 new pickleball courts. They would love for you to bring your paddle and a chair to join them in a few social games on their new courts. There will be live musical entertainment, prize drawings for pickleball paddles, and food specials! Court times will be assigned by sign in time and level of play. Ken Reese and his latest Court Contribution

In an effort to relieve the congestion at the sign up boards, during round robins, Ken designed and built this portable board. The court schedule is easier to read, courts are easily selected for play via magnetic numbers (no more magic marker), the slide tells you which game is being played (no more little pieces of tape) and an easily accessible board to write your scores. When Ken is playing on the courts, we can usually "hear" him and he is very visible. Off the courts he is actually camera shy, Verna Moore had her work cut out for her in getting this picture.

Paddle Clinic has a Big Turnout

A large number of Pickleball players attended the first Paddle Clinic held at Palm Creek. Players were able to ask vendors about the advantages of different paddles and were given the opportunity to try them out on the courts. As sales were brisk, expect the competition to be even tougher this week on the courts!

Paddle Demo Day

What: A day when you'll be able to hear about many of your favorite paddles, try them out, and even buy them. There will be presentations about the construction of various paddles, discussion of why one paddle might be better for you than another, and opportunities for you to try your favorite paddle on the courts.

Where: Palm Creek Pickleball Club courts

When: Saturday, January 14, from 1-4 PM

Who: All are invited. Three significant vendors of paddles representing six or more paddle lines and many models in each line will be here to help you find out more about paddles and buy one if you wish.

How much: How much do you have? As noted, paddles will be for sale. Custom orders are possible with some paddles. There is NO admission charge to this event.

NOTE: There are several other events going on within the club this same afternoon. Among them, there is referee training, Inter-Club Women's Play, and our working as club volunteers to pick up chairs after the Park's Welcome Back is over at 1:45 PM. None of these should prevent you from coming to some part of the Paddle Demo Day and participating. If you want to come and stay, you're welcome. If you want to drop in...and out...you are also welcome. No problem!

Looking for a fun rewarding way to volunteer your time this year for the Tournament. The Club NEEDS your HELP!
The Pickleball club tournament Raffle is an important part of our Tournament and has become an anticipated highlight to many who participate and attend, as well as becoming a significant fundraiser for our club.

This year it has been decided to keep the raffle to a more reasonable 10 items per day. This will be much less stressful for our volunteers. If you can help solicit for donations and/or work the raffle table during any of the three days of the tournament, please contact me as soon as possible.

A few revisions have been made to the court schedule, every effort is being made to provide court time that each player wants: Rated events and a shoot out for competitive players, round robins by skill level for both competitive and social players, more beginner round robins to welcome more players into our community.

New events:

Wednesday - 6:30 - 8:30 PM - Mixed Rated 3.5 Partner Play

Saturday - 2:00 - 4:00 PM - Mixed 2.5/2.0 Round Robin (4 courts) effective 1/21

Saturday - 2:00 - 4:00 PM - Ladies Inter Community Play (4 courts)

Note: Mixed 4.0 + Partners and Mixed 3.5 Partners Round Robins - USAPA Rated players only.

4.0 + 1 partner must be USAPA Rated 4.0 or higher, may play with a 3.5 USAPA rated partner

As the courts are now very busy please help us in providing all club members the best play possible:

1. When you sign up for a scheduled event - please sign your full name and site number

2. If you sign up and realize that you can't play - please erase your name, move the first alternate up and put a line through their name.

3. As the scheduled events are full, if you do not check in 15 minutes before the hour, you will not be put on the roster to play, this is the cut off, earlier arrival and check in would be appreciated.

4. Please sign up for "your skill level ". Players who sign up at multiple skill levels are denying other players the opportunity to play.

5. If you would like to participate in "Rated" play - contact LeRoy Schmidt via e-mail: Schmidtb@bresnan.net , Ratings are done in a timely manner and USAPA membership is required.

5. It has been requested that scores be filled in for all players "Except Couples" on Sunday. The rumor mill that says this will be used to move you to a lower bracket, is counter productive. Analysis of all court data is useful for preparing training sessions, future allocation of events by skill level etc.

Volunteers Needed

The Palm Creek Pickleball Club Training Department needs your help as an instructor! As you know we conduct a full program of training suitable to almost all pickleball players, no matter their skill level. This year we will offer at least a dozen different courses, all of them run entirely by volunteers from within the club.

Our intention, this year, is to have three instructors for each class, and with only a few exceptions to have no instructor required to do more than one class. Each class will (probably) be repeated once, so there will be two occurrences of each class. What this means is that each volunteer instructor will only help instruct one class, and do that class only two times...a total commitment of about four hours. (Each class will have about one hour of instruction and one hour of supervised play.)

Given that we would like to see three instructors at each class, with a dozen courses this means we have room for as many as 36 instructors, and right now we only have a dozen.

Would you like to help as an instructor? Even if you haven't had a specific background in teaching, coaching, consulting, mentoring or the like, you're still welcome if you have reasonable communication skills and the willingness to help other fellow players get better.....and the benefits to you are several:
1. You give back to your club and help your fellow players.
2. You build or tune up your teaching and coaching skills
3. You learn how to teach certain aspects of pickleball that you can then use at "home" when you return after the winter season...to help your friends and fellow players there
4. You yourself will undoubtedly learn as much as you teach...funny that it works that way, but it's true...and it's true no matter how good you already are!

What are the requirements for an instructor here? There are only a few:
1. You should be willing to make a commitment of about 8 hours spread over a month....four hours to learn the course content (all the course design is already completed or will soon be completed) and two two-hour blocks of conducting the one course. Depending on the course this commitment will need to be met between January and April of 2012.
2. You should have pretty good communications skills. This only means that you are willing to work with people, take them at the levels you find them, and show them and help them to become better players. This does not mean that you are a great public speaker....entirely unnecessary!
3. You should currently be playing at a 3.5 level or above. If you are playing below that level but have a strong desire to help, let us know and we may be able to work with you...but a few of the courses will require at least 3.5-level skills. (Being rated at 3.5 or above is NOT necessary...we're not talking here about USAPA ratings, we're talking about your playing level.)

Referees in Training

The first referee clinic for the season was held on Saturday, with 38 soon to be top rated referees attending. Referees are an important part of a well run tournament. An insufficient number of trained referees available, can cause critical delays in a tournament. We are fortunate that we have had members attend these clinics throughout the years, creating a strong nucleus. As our tournament continues to grow so does our need for additional referees. For the first time our clinic was attended by members of the Mission Royale and Robson Ranch communities. This community training will provide a good pool of referees for all future tournaments in the Casa Grande area.
Participants in this clinic will attend a follow up clinic this upcoming Saturday.
Are you interested in joining this group of referees? The Next Beginner Referee clinic is scheduled on January 7th from 3-5 PM at the court pavilion. You do not need to be a "great" player to be a "great" referee. All you need is an understanding of the game and be willing to participate. Training and practice time will be provided for you develop the skills to be a good referee.

***Please register for this tournament online at www.pickleballtournaments.com instead of using the Senior Olympic’s paper or EZEEreg registration. A registration form for pickleball events only and the waiver for the Senior Olympic Festival will print out at the end of the registration process. Each partner will need to do their own registration online. If you sign up online with this system, partners do not need to sign up together, on one form, as they have in the past. The form and the fees must be mailed to 900 S. Randolph Way, Tucson, AZ 85716 to finalize your entry.

The tournament will run from Tuesday – Saturday, a week earlier than prior years. A Meet & Greet will be at the venue on Monday, Jan 16 at 6:00 pm. Once you register you will get more info.

There are both age-based and skill level events. Mixed doubles has been changed to SKILL LEVEL ONLY for 2012. Singles will be age-based only.

New Court Update

The plans for the new court are still on track. A landscape architect is currently drawing plans showing the layout of the courts and associated facilities. The plans should be to Palm Creek management some time the week of December 5th. As soon as they have the plans the pickleball club will be given a copy for our viewing. If everything goes as planned I will have our copy of the plans at the club meeting on December 15th. Everyone at the meeting will have a chance to look over the plan and give their input. We still do not have an official count of how many courts will be built. If there are any changes to this information I will post it here.

Performance One Paddles (POP). Model Q1 (graphite and cork), Model Q1 (aluminum and Cork) Fails the deflection test, this paddle is sold by Brian Jensen.

CG residents win at senior games

Residents from Palm Creek Golf & RV Resort and Mission Royale brought home a total of 14 medals from the 25th annual Huntsman World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. The games ended Saturday.

In this year's games, more than 10,000 athletes participated in 26 sports.

Palm Creek medal winners included Sue Buerkens, Vance Christiansen, Sherry Gusse, Al Hager, Lee Moore, Sandy Stephens and Mary Whitfield.
Mission Royale winners were Lenny Chimino and John Grasso.

New Pickleball Courts: Update #1

AJ Fraties, Neal Whitfield and myself met with Palm Creek management to discuss the new courts for Palm Creek. This was our first chance to look at the plans Palm Creek has drawn up for their expansion. Of course the expansion has new RV sites. It also has pickleball courts, softball field, restrooms, food facility, doggie run, recycling area, parking, and picnic area. There is not unlimited area. To fit the ball field and pickleball courts the layout is not ideal but very workable. The current drawing has room for 26 pickleball courts. We most likely will not get 26 courts now. The final number of courts will be decided by costs of the courts and available financing. It will be awhile before we know those numbers.

We did emphasize our club’s consensus that we did not want to split the courts up. We do not want new courts in the expansion area and still have our current courts to use. It is very important to us that we have our all our courts in one place. We like the single court area for the cohesion it brings the group and how much easier it is to put on tournaments with only one venue. We will continue to work with Palm Creek on the details of the plan. I will be supplying them with the list of amenities that we would like to see. We will meet again next week to continue working on the details. As more details become available I will post them.

This get together was enjoyed by all, the tables were set, there was more food than we could eat; although unusual we even had too much desert! With music in the background everyone had fun circulating from table to table. Summer play once again has been a lot of fun for all!

Many of you may think that the only Pickleball Season at Palm Creek is when you are here for the Winter months. During the Summer months, Pickleball is very active. No one is deterred by the heat or having to bring their own water or their own balls. On average 4-8 courts have been busy all season, with always a few players sitting out. Early morning play is enjoyed, with no chattering teeth or ice on the balls. A few fans are set up for when sitting around between games. Last week the players were enjoying fresh fruit and cookies! Palm Creek, Mission Royale and Robson Ranch united and rotated venues for playing. A great job was done with organizing the Summer League. The occasional evening pool parties with water volleyball were an extra bonus for a good time. In addition to good play, this summer league afforded everyone the opportunity to make new and lasting friendships; this is the key element that makes Palm Creek and Pickleball the game of choice.

As the season is coming to an end it is time for one more fun Summer get together. If you are a pickler and your here do come...

Each year as we have seen this tournament grow, it has been a barometer for the overall growth we could expect for the upcoming season. Although registration remains open for the other 26 participating sports until September 1st, not for Pickleball. The following has been posted on the Huntsman website

Upon reaching the 400 mark, registration for Pickleball closed. The Games is keeping a waiting list, so athletes who would like to be considered to fill in if there are cancelations are encouraged to call the Games office at (800) 562-1268. Athletes on the waiting list should know by August 15, 2011 if they will have a place in the tournament.

This is pretty big news as this is the first time this has happened at Huntsman

There is even bigger news for our club. As part of a series, LeRoy Schmidt has been featured in an article on the Huntsman website. LeRoy for the past 2 years with his wife Barb has been our Tournament Director and they are both voulunteers for our Novice training program.

In Memory of Rick Watkins

RICHARD WATKINS
Died on Friday, April 15, 2011, at his home.
Rick will be remembered by our Club Members as the 2008 Legend Silver Medal Winner in our Palm Creek Tournament. He will also be remembered as a good sport and for his enjoyment of the game.
The following is an excerpt from his Obituary:
He married Shirley Truitt on February 27, 1953, in Kirksville, Missouri.
He served with the U.S. Marine Corps as a Lieutenant at Cherry Point Marine Air Base in North Carolina. Following his time in the service, he earned his Master in Education degree at Northeast Missouri State in Guidance Counseling. He later earned his certification in Secondary Administration.
In his career as an educator, he coached football, basketball, track and golf first at Lohrville High School in Lohrville and then at South Tama High School in Toledo. Later he worked as a guidance counselor, coach, Athletic Director, and Assistant High School Principal in South Tama. After moving to Muscatine in 1974, he was the Principal at Central Middle School.
Rick ran many Bix 7 and Peachtree 10K road races and also half marathons usually with his son, daughter, and granddaughter. For a time he raised Shetland ponies. He also enjoyed flying radio controlled airplanes. He and his wife spent over 20 winters in Casa Grande, Arizona, where he enjoyed playing tennis, pickle ball, and golf with friends there. In the summers back in Iowa, he continued with those sports. He loved camping and bicycling with family and grandchildren.
Sincere Condolences to Rick's family and friends
In memory Rick's name will be added to our Memoriam plaque at the courts.

Schedule Update

Starting Monday play will begin at 6:30 AM, you do not have to arrive at this time as play will last for 2-3 hours
Play will be at Palm Creek on Monday's and Friday's
Play will be at Mission Royale on Wednesday's and Saturday's
Monday and Saturday play will be social
Wednesday and Friday play will be skill level

Robson Ranch as a venue will be put back into the rotation, when the number of players decrease, currently the league has approximately 35 players

PINAL COUNTY PICKLEBALL LEAGUE

The Pinal County Pickleball League Board met on April 23, 2011 to set the Summer Calendar for 2011.
The League will begin on May 9th, 2011 and start at 7:00 AM.
See the calendar for location of play.
The Summer League is for fun and open to all players. The winter League will return in October. The Board will meet in September to set the winter play schedule.
The next meeting, date to be set, will determine how the Pickle-balls will be paid for.
