Updates on Scheduled Play + More

Effective immediately:

Rated 3.5 players are encouraged to also sign up for Unrated 4.0 + play.  
This is for "rated" 3.5 players "only".  This will not change your rating. You will remain a rated 3.5 player, until such time you request a new rating or your rating is changed as a result of tournament play.
Playing with 4.0 players will provide you with another opportunity to improve your skills.
The policy has not changed for "unrated players".  
"Unrated" players may self rate and move up at any time, they can only play in one skill level for a full week, the week beginning on Sunday.  If after playing for one week at a higher skill level you decide to stay at that level, you will than continue to play at that level only.

We are going to busy this upcoming week. Be advised that courts will be cleaned on Saturday and Sunday from  3 - 5 PM.
Plan accordingly, if you intend to play on these days

All schedule play is canceled on Monday, March 4th
We will be holding the "Mark Friedenberg Clinic"
There is a fee of $ 5.00, to attend this clinic.  
Please do not "hang out" around the perimeter to "audit" the clinic.  Registrants will be given a wrist band so that they can leave and return.
In addition to the Clinic the club will be busy setting up the courts for the tournament

Tuesday - Thursday - All play is canceled for the tournament.

Friday - March 8th we will resume our scheduled play.
There will be schedule changes starting Sunday, March 10th
You will be updated in advance.

One last item - Cash was found on courts 1-8 early Tuesday morning.  It may have been lost on Monday.  If you can identify how much you lost, it will be returned to you.  Please contact either Mark Nelson or me.

We Are Really Busy!

Final Clinic of the Season:

This is been the most aggressive schedule so for, we opened the season with Steve Wong, we were so very fortunate to have Dennis Forbes and for the finale, Mark Friedenberg..

Yoda Friedenberg is famous as a clinician, coach, as a National Champion, as a strategist and author of the best-selling “Official Handbook of Pickleball.” Yoda has all the chops…he was president of the USAPA, was founder and president of Pro-Lite Sports (one of the premier manufacturers of paddles), and is currently writing the third edition of the “Official Handbook”, adding in new secrets that he will now share with us!  For any skill level, this clinic and Yoda will teach you something new

Organized play is cancelled for March 4th - March 7th the courts will be busy with the clinic and our 10th Annual Tournament.

 

Kudos to Colin Caldwell, our tournament director, for applying to the USAPA and making our tournament a level Tier 2!  We are the first club in Arizona to receive this Tier, the only tournament rated higher is "The Nationals".

 

You will also find sign up sheets on "Big Blue" for volunteers to bake cookies for our tournament, with 418 players, we will need a lot, each volunteer is asked to bake - 2 dozen!

We are going to order the brass name plates, for members who have donated medals that have been placed on "Big Blue"

If you have a medal or medals from different tournaments from around the country, that you would like to have placed on the board, please bring them to the meeting, in a bag with your name on it (duplicates will be returned)

We are also still looking for medals from Palm Creeks first 2 tournaments: 2004 and 2005 as well as a gold and silver medal from 2008

 REFEREE CRITIQUE 

All Referees! Please come to a "REFEREE CRITIQUE" meeting 

Wednesday, February 13th, at 3:00 up at the Pickleball courts 

This will give us all a chance to "Critique" what went on in our "In House" tournament and maybe better prepare us for our annual tournament.

Resident Tournament

 

We are all looking forward to three days of fun and competition. We have a record breaking number of players this year (220+) competing. Volunteers have put in countless hours in preparing for this event. This will be the first time we will be using the latest software for the brackets!  By the end of the tournament 138 Medals will be awarded!.

 

 

 

 

 

 

All the players will be bringing their "A" game and sportsmanship to the courts.  It is really difficult to cheer for a team when everyone playing is part of the "home team".  It is always correct to applaud a great rally or a great shot. For new comers to the game, it is never correct to applaud a bad shot or an error.

 

The Sports Grill will be preparing lunch for a fixed cost of $5.00 for Sandwich, chips and Drink!

 

USAPA Table will be set up to register new members and for renewals

 

Club Pins will also be available $3 each or 2 for $5 (think Valentines Day)

Special Election

Vern Jacobsen has resigned as Treasurer.  Pursuant to the Bylaws, the Executive Board has appointed  Roger Fellows to fill this position, until we hold a special election.
As previously announced, we will hold a special election at this month's general meeting.
The newly elected Treasurer's term will  end March 31, 2014

Referee Meeting



To All referees (both new and old):

Referee meeting for our upcoming "IN House" Tournament will be held 4:00 Friday afternoon at the pickleball courts. It will be short. We need to find out who will be able to referee right off the bat at 7:30 a.m. each one of the mornings of that tournament and we'll need at least 24! Please make every effort to attend. You are definitely needed!
